Laid off from Shopify? Here’s what your severance should be.

Shopify carried out widely reported layoffs in 2023. If you were affected and based in Canada, the severance picture is very different from the United States — and usually more favourable to you.

Shopify is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. In Ontario, your Employment Standards Act minimum is only the floor; Canadian common-law "reasonable notice" is frequently much higher, and most negotiated settlements land between the two. Knowing both numbers before you respond is where the money is.

Before you sign your Shopify severance agreement

A first severance offer is almost always a starting point. The company expects most people to accept it without a word — which is exactly why a specific, market-grounded counter so often works. Use the estimate above to see whether your offer is low, fair, or already generous for your role and tenure, then negotiate from there. If you are 40 or older in the US, you are entitled to time to review the agreement before signing; in Canada, your provincial minimum is a floor, not the real number.
